What they do well, and their limits

The appeal is obvious: no aiming knowledge, fast setup, and a rugged sealed housing with nothing exposed to fumble with. For someone who wants television at a game, a quick overnight, or an occasional trip, that convenience is hard to beat. The trade-offs are equally real. The reflector inside is small, so reception in fringe or weak-signal areas is weaker than a larger dish would give. The dome is provider-locked in most cases. And because it relies on motors and electronics, a mechanical or sensor fault in the field leaves you with no simple manual backup, unlike a plain dish you can always aim by hand.

An automatic dome still cannot see through obstructions. If it fails to find a signal, the cause is almost always a blocked view of the sky rather than a faulty unit. Move the dome to open ground with a clear line toward the satellite before assuming anything is broken.

Power and setup

These antennas draw very little power. The dome's motors run only during the brief search, and the receiver and television are what actually consume your battery over an evening. A single coax cable typically carries the signal from the dome to the receiver, so keep that cable in good condition with clean, tight connectors; a damaged lead is a far more common failure than the antenna itself.
